Private William Simpson Moore

 

William Simpson Moore was born on 10 September 1892 at 24 Upper Charleville Street, Belfast, the fourth of six children of carpenter Hugh Moore and his wife Eliza (née Simpson). His father died when he was just six years old. By the time of the 1911 census he was living in Upper Meadow Street, Belfast, with his mother, his three surviving siblings, his grandmother and an aunt, and working as a French polisher.

Moore enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 13 and 19 May 1915 (No.1548 – later Corps of Hussars No.71435). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France sometime in 1916 or 1917, possibly with E Squadron on 11 January 1916.

In May 1916 E Squadron came together with A and D Squadrons to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps.

Moore was transferred to the Army Service Corps (Motor Transport) on 31 January 1918 (No. M/40581). No information has been located about his service with that regiment through 1918.
